Getting Schools involved with TBI Raiders

Posted by Alicia Murie on Monday, June 1, 2015, In : News
Written by Joselyn Harris

Getting schools involved with TBI Raiders would not only beneficial to schools but also to students. Traumatic Brain Injury is a brain dysfunction caused by an outside-force such as a concussion. The case is common affecting 200,000 to 2 million people per year. I currently am getting my school involved mainly because my school is not familiar with TBI or really any disability. It is very important for students to understand that they have the chance to save people fr...

By Joselyn Harris

Future Blog Posts

Posted by Alicia Murie on Thursday, May 28, 2015, In : News
Future blog posts will be from the volunteers of TBI Raiders.  You will see articles in Spanish but there will be a link to the page where you can find the same article in English.  This is to reach out to those in the Spanish speaking community who may know little to no English.  This is to let them know TBI Raiders is here to help them to.  But just a heads up, I don't speak Spanish.  We have a volunteer who is fluent in the language and will be sending me the articles and I will post them ...

Excitement!

Posted by Alicia Murie on Saturday, February 15, 2014, In : News
Last spring when I was attending Oklahoma State University, I decided to get involved in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature.  I was so happy that I did.  I started advocating on TBI when I started college back in August of '99.  I was a student leader at Rose State College and began to work with legislators and advocating to them about TBI.  I also was able to learn a lot from those leaders.  But still something was missing until I became involved in OIL.  Through this wonderful organiz...

Busy busy

Posted by Alicia Murie on Friday, April 5, 2013, In : News
Sorry I haven't posted an update in forever on here guys.  I started back to college in January and if everything goes right I will graduate in May of 2015.  I'm a political science major right now but once I get my GPA raised back up will be switching it back to a University Studies degree.  Once I am able to do that I will have 10 classes left in Political Science and 2 left in Health Promotion.  I am doing this so I can help those with disabilities get a bigger voice politically speaking.

Time to get planning...

Posted by Alicia Murie on Wednesday, December 5, 2012, In : News
I know I haven't been updating the websites as much I used to and this is due to the fact that we don't have dsl at home yet.  I had one meeting with Joyce Montgomery on the 3rd.  Joyce is the Coordinator of the Service Learning Volunteer Center at Oklahoma State University.  I will be meeting next week with Oklahoma's People First and will also be attending the Oklahoma Self-Advocacy Network meeting.  Oklahoma's People First and TBI Raiders will be working together on a project.  It may be R...

I'm going to be amazed if I can think straight at the end of the month...lol

Posted by Alicia Payne on Sunday, July 15, 2012, In : News
This is because next week I will be getting my wisdom teeth out, another tooth pulled, and some muscle shortened between two teeth.  Then the following week I will be moving.  Then the next month is when school starts back!  I have been creating new things that can be found on the TBI Raiders Online Store.  A friend who like me was a member of the Abled Disabled Association at Rose State College, has been creating some graphics then I have been coming up with logos.  I will be keeping informa...

Looking forward to 2012

Posted by Alicia Payne on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, In : News
I've told some that I'm close to but this is something I really believe.  This would be that 2012 is going to be the year for the Traumatic Brain Injury community...well at least in Oklahoma.  I'm going to be working my hardest at getting something started in the state to help Traumatic Brain Injury survivors.  Before anyone talks about funding, I'm in the process of looking at what some other states are doing.  I'll be speaking one program director on Thursday to see if we can get something ...

Groups to speak to

Posted by Alicia Payne on Thursday, September 29, 2011, In : News
I will be going to the meeting for the Health Promotion Club and the Native American Student Association.  I know the Young Democrats I think meet on Thursday but haven't heard about a meeting.  I'm so pumped about speaking at a future meeting for these two organizations.  They have been 100% supportive of everything.  So I will be taking my USB drive which has documents on what I am wanting to do and more information on TBI Raiders.

It has just been a  matter of me pulling plans together.  Wh...

Time to get back into the swing of things!

Posted by Alicia Payne on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, In : News
Well the other day I had a telephone interview with Paul Fairchild who writes for the Oklahoma Magazine.  I got to tell him my story.  My head started spinning when I told him the organizations I had been in and am currently a part of.  I knew I left some out so I sent him my resume....lol.  After we talked I emailed him some documents which are for TBI Raiders.  I had fun telling him the organizations I had been in at OSU and which ones I was the community partner for.    I told him in about...

Holy Cow! Things have been crazy!!!

Posted by Alicia Payne on Monday, May 16, 2011, In : News
And dude I'm not even talking normal crazy!  It is insane for me to think I have gotten to have six days this year to where I basically went the entire day like I would have had I not had a disability.  The only consequences that have followed is that it completely wipes me out to where all I want to do is sleep.  But I take a day here and there to where I am working on the sites and looking over all the pages.  I'm going to wait until after the next meeting I will be going to in Oklahoma Cit...

Catching up on my sleep and relaxing

Posted by Alicia Payne on Saturday, April 16, 2011, In : News
And by relaxing, I mean really relaxing...lol.  I had the most wonderful week ever.  From Sunday to Tuesday I was in Kansas City, Missouri for the Self Advocacy Summit.  I had a wonderful time and learned so much while there.  Oklahoma was represented very well.  The thing I absolutely enjoyed the most was the only side effect I had to deal with was muscle tone.  I didn't have any problems with muscle spasms or short term memory problems...which I'm used to dealing with on a daily basis at ti...

Posted by Alicia Payne on Saturday, December 18, 2010, In : News
I'm so happy not only that there is someone now to help me the websites but am so thrilled that it is one of my friends I attended Rose State with.  Amber Stephens is a general studies major at the University of Central Oklahoma.  Jennifer Rodriguez, Amber Stephens and I were all three student leaders while we were attending Rose State College.  Jennifer was a student senator while Amber and I were officers for the Abled Disabled Association.  I'm so excited that Jennifer and Amber have jumpe...

Disability Forum

Posted by Alicia Payne on Saturday, September 25, 2010, In : News
Below are the notes I posted on the TBI Raiders Message Board.  We will be meeting again in the University Health Service room 003 at 2:00-3:00pm on Tuesday.  The Payne County Democrats provided the refreshments and are helping me with putting together the disability forums and are also working with the OSU Disability Support Services.

Even though we didn't have any students with disabilities attend, we did have someone who was a pre-health major and someone who was with the Native Ameri...

Awesome Day

Posted by Alicia Payne on Thursday, August 19, 2010, In : News
Even though it is only around three in the afternoon, I have had the most awesome day!  I had a meeting earlier today with my advisor at school and discussed my plans and what I would need to do to return to school since I am taking a year off from school.  Then I talked to Michelle in her office and discussed doing something with her and helping students with getting the career that they want.  I talked to her about what I am doing at OSU on September 7th and gave her the times for the event...

Change of plans for a semester

Posted by Alicia Payne on Thursday, August 5, 2010, In : News
I am referring to the fact I won't be returning to school this fall but will in the spring.    But all the activities I had already scheduled for the fall are still on.  I'm waiting to hear back from the two high schools I have communicated with.  Not having classes is going to give me a chance to do two things I love....substituting at schools and getting more involved in TBI Raiders.  Plus it'll give me a chance to look around at things I want to have in my wedding when I marry my first lov...

Hard at work

Posted by Alicia Payne on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, In : News
I'm trying to get as much done as I can on the volunteer website before school starts back at OSU.  I'll only be taking two classes in the morning but am going to try to concentrate on them as much as I can.  Since I imagine both my yahoo and okstate email accounts will fill up easily once school starts back, email me at osuallie@gmail.com if you would like to discuss TBI Raiders, disability issues, or Traumatic Brain Injury issues with me.

Hope your summer is going great!

Posted by Alicia Payne on Sunday, June 27, 2010, In : News
This isn't so much an update as it is just a simple little 'ol letter from the director, me, to you.  We have some exciting things going on at Oklahoma State for students with disabilities.  Lauren out of Lt. Gov. Askins office believes in the organization and is committed to helping us.  Rep. Denney requested a report of the meeting that was held at Oklahoma State University on June 17th.  As for Lt. Gov. Askins I cannot say to a full extent how awesome I think she is.  As far as the governo...

17th is getting closer!

Posted by Alicia Payne on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, In : News
This is very exciting!  We have the meeting on the 17th getting closer.  While Lt. Governor Askins will not be able to make it, she will have someone from her office be on the call that will be going on at the same time.  I did a teleconference number for the meeting so that way if people were unable to attend they could at least call in and be part of the meeting.  Two professors at Oklahoma State did email back to say they would tell their students about the meeting.  The only thing I am wa...

and then I have only one week off before I start pre-summer session and I'll do that for three weeks.  I'm taking Economics.  The week I have off I am planning on working on the newsletter and also during that week I am going to try to meet with someone about townsphere.com.  I recently joined it and as soon as they found out about the organization, they wanted to meet with me.  I haven't set up the meet with him, Cody, just yet.  I've been studying for finals and up to a few other things lat...

A new year is coming!

Posted by Alicia Payne on Thursday, December 24, 2009, In : News
A new year is coming everyone!!!  There has been so many huge developments this semester while I've been attending OSU!  The OSU Volunteer Center will be helping TBI Raiders build a student organization for students who have sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury aka BRain Injured Gifted Hopeful Talents (BRIGHT).  I've changed my major to community health which will be more in line with what I want to become - an instructor on Traumatic Brain Injury.  I'm moving the websites to a new web host and...

Posted by Alicia Payne on Sunday, October 4, 2009, In : News
I am going to be slowly working on the websites since I have figured out a time schedule to do it and have
study time left for homework and everything.  I spoke to some student ambassadors about two weeks ago.
Then I know of two classmates who have voiced interest in getting involved.  I finally have the fall newsletter done and hope to provide more updates as time goes on.

Things are underway...

Posted by Alicia Payne on Friday, March 27, 2009, In : News
I've been working on moving the websites to the new web host.  I almost have Survived to Vote completely moved over to this account.  I am moving all the websites from Angelfire to here....but am taking my time at doing so.  My plan is to have them completely (or try to) moved over to this web host by the end of April which would tie into when I want to have the May summer newsletter up by.

I am waiting to hear from the state capitol in terms of getting a state program or something to that ext...
